At a Senate hearing on domestic extremism held Tuesday, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) directed a series of questions towards Arab American Institute Executive Director Maya Berry, repeatedly inquiring whether she supported the terrorist organizations Hamas and Hezbollah. This line of questioning has been described as insulting and abusive.
In response to the incident, Center for American Progress President and CEO Patrick Gaspard issued a statement condemning Sen. Kennedy's actions. "Sen. Kennedy’s vile attack on Maya Berry is unbecoming of the U.S. Senate and must face censure," Gaspard stated. "We cannot allow ourselves to be so numb to the normalizing of hate speech that this senator is allowed to escape any consequences."
Gaspard further emphasized the severity of the situation by describing it as "a shocking display of anti-Arab American bigotry against a civil society leader who came to Congress with the goal of protecting all communities from hate." He praised Berry for her composure during what he termed a "vicious ad hominem screed" by Sen. Kennedy.
Berry was commended for her dedication to fighting extremism despite facing such hostility. Gaspard concluded his statement by asserting that "hate should have no haven in Congress," and called for Sen. Kennedy to be censured for his remarks.
