The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is honoring two California organizations as part of its 2024 Regional Pollution Prevention (P2) Recognition Program during Pollution Prevention Week. Zero Waste San Diego and Western Digital Technologies in Fremont are being recognized for their efforts to reduce, eliminate, or prevent pollution at its source before recycling, treatment, or disposal. In 2023, these organizations collectively reduced the equivalent of 1,357 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
“EPA is proud to recognize the accomplishments of these environmental leaders in California who are preventing pollution and making meaningful change in their communities,” said EPA Pacific Southwest Land, Chemicals, and Redevelopment Division Director Claire Trombadore. “These honorees are taking action to reduce pollution, advance environmental justice and address climate change.”
Zero Waste San Diego offers free “fixit” clinics that bring together community members and local tradespeople to repair broken electronics, appliances, clothes, and other household items. Since 2016, over 100 clinics have been hosted across 11 neighborhoods in San Diego County with a volunteer team of 20 technicians and tradespeople. The program has expanded into Los Angeles County and has reduced 10,110 pounds of waste while repairing 340 items.
"Reuse and repair are essential components of a circular economy," said Laura Anthony, Director of Zero Waste San Diego. "Designing products for reuse and repair is the key component of pollution prevention."
Western Digital Technologies in Fremont has implemented comprehensive internal policies to minimize pollution by reducing emissions, conserving water, and minimizing waste. Their environmental management system adheres to International Organization for Standardization’s Environmental Management System standards (ISO 14001). In 2023 alone, they conserved over 1.8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy and saved 7.1 million gallons of water.
“At Western Digital, environmental stewardship is integral to our business,” said Xhavin Sinha, Principal Engineer at Western Digital Technologies. “This EPA award recognizes our commitment to pollution prevention through innovative practices.”
In total for the year 2023 across Arizona, California, and Nevada:
- The equivalent reduction was approximately 1,443 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
- Energy use was cut by around 1.98 million kWh.
- Water usage decreased by about 11.28 million gallons.
- Business costs were reduced by $495,000.
Pollution Prevention Week runs from September 16-20 each year with the theme “Together We Are One Planet.” The EPA Regional Pollution Prevention Recognition program remains a voluntary annual initiative aimed at encouraging stakeholders to implement innovative ways to prevent pollution.
