Meta ends direct peering with Deutsche Telekom amid net neutrality concerns

Meta has announced the end of its direct peering relationship with Deutsche Telekom, citing concerns over net neutrality and market power abuses. The company expressed disappointment over failed negotiations and revealed that it will now route network traffic through a third-party transit provider instead of directly exchanging traffic with Deutsche Telekom.

"People expect reliable internet connections from their telecom provider to quickly and easily access the content they choose," Meta stated. The company accused Deutsche Telekom of potentially restricting access to internet services that do not pay additional fees, effectively creating a "de facto paywall."

Despite efforts to maintain direct connectivity, Meta's decision follows a court ruling against what it describes as "unprecedented and unacceptable fees" demanded by Deutsche Telekom. Meta emphasized that transit providers facilitate connections where direct links are not feasible and hopes this move will not disrupt user experiences in Germany.

Direct peering relationships allow customers to access internet-delivered services efficiently. Meta highlighted its settlement-free relationships with numerous telecom providers worldwide, which it claims benefit both content providers and telecom companies. These arrangements are recognized by the Body of European Electronic Communications Regulators (BEREC) as fair and cost-effective.

Meta pointed out its significant investments in digital infrastructure, amounting to over €27 billion globally in 2022 alone, which help reduce costs for telecom providers like Deutsche Telekom. Additionally, Meta continues to invest in its edge network to lower latency and costs further.

The company warned that Deutsche Telekom's practices could set a dangerous global precedent, threatening net neutrality and open internet principles. Meta remains hopeful for a future agreement that will allow Deutsche Telekom subscribers uninterrupted access to its apps.
