President Biden has signed the Presidential Determination on Refugee Admissions for Fiscal Year 2025, maintaining the refugee admissions target at 125,000 for the upcoming fiscal year. This continues the policy set by his administration in previous years.
Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken emphasized that "refugee resettlement exemplifies the generosity that has always been at the core of the American spirit and reflects the critical role of the United States as a global leader in providing refuge to people fleeing persecution overseas." In Fiscal Year 2024, the U.S. resettled 100,000 refugees, marking the highest annual number in three decades. This achievement is attributed to efforts to rebuild the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program with support from international partners and American citizens who have sponsored refugees through initiatives like Welcome Corps.
Blinken noted that refugee resettlement is conducted in an orderly manner with rigorous vetting processes and brings numerous benefits to American communities. He stated, "In cities and towns throughout America, refugees contribute to urban revitalization, add to the vibrancy of local communities, and drive America’s competitiveness and innovation on the global stage." Over a span of 15 years, refugees have contributed nearly $124 billion to the U.S. economy.
The administration's ongoing efforts aim to strengthen refugee resettlement programs with continued support from Americans nationwide. The maintained target of 125,000 admissions underscores America's commitment to offering safety and opportunities to those facing persecution globally.
