Gary Shapiro, CEO of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), responded to Governor Newsom's recent veto of the AI "safety" bill, SB 1047. In a statement, Shapiro expressed his support for the governor's decision.
"Governor Newsom made the right decision to veto SB 1047— a bill that would have created barriers for developers and worsened the state’s budget deficit," said Shapiro. He emphasized the need for a cohesive national approach to AI regulation.
"We need a national AI framework that takes a balanced approach to ensure AI systems are managing risk, while allowing businesses flexibility to innovate and avoiding a confusing patchwork of state-level AI bills," Shapiro added.
The CTA's stance highlights concerns over potential obstacles that state-specific regulations could pose to technological development and fiscal stability.
