Department of Labor completes OSHA regional restructuring with new Birmingham office

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has completed a restructuring of its regional operations. This initiative includes the creation of a new region based in Birmingham, which will serve Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and the Florida Panhandle.

In addition to establishing the Birmingham region, OSHA has expanded its San Francisco region by merging Regions 9 and 10. The agency will now use geographic designations rather than numerals to identify its regions.

The newly designated regions are as follows:

- Boston replaces Region 1

- New York City replaces Region 2

- Philadelphia replaces Region 3

- Atlanta replaces Region 4

- Chicago replaces Region 5

- Dallas replaces Region 6

- Kansas City replaces Region 7

- Denver replaces Region 8

- San Francisco combines Regions 9 and 10

The Birmingham region will be led by Regional Administrator Dorinda Hughes and Deputy Regional Administrator Jack Rector. Hughes has held various roles within OSHA since joining in 1991, including deputy regional administrator and area director. Rector joined OSHA in 2003 and has served as an OSHA safety and health compliance officer among other positions.

OSHA’s restructuring aims to bring its offices closer to communities needing services and strengthen the agency's presence in the southeastern U.S. The agency also expects that these changes will reduce response times to complaints, fatalities, imminent danger situations, and significant events.
