BRUSSELS – The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), a global tech trade association, has presented its Tech Sector Vision on EU Sustainability Strategy. This initiative aims to harness the potential of technology to achieve the European Union's environmental goals in the upcoming mandate.
The document from ITI highlights the transformative capabilities of new digital technologies in driving clean growth, echoing sentiments expressed by former Prime Minister of Italy and President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi in his report.
"ITI advocates for a more positive approach to sustainability frameworks for businesses," said ITI Policy Manager for Europe Gabriele Favarò. "The global tech sector can lead the way in developing new solutions that allow the EU to make its sustainability ambitions viable and competitive. This means having proper checks on the impact of legislation, considering potential overlaps, focusing on understandable and effective implementation, and adopting a technologically neutral approach to the twin transition."
The Tech Sector Vision on EU Sustainability Strategy outlines four strategic priorities:
1. Foster the enabling role of digital for the green transition through public-private partnerships, funding for innovative solutions, and a friendlier regulatory environment.
2. Encourage an agile, lean, and safe circular economy model where regulation is harmonized and streamlined to encourage innovation while protecting intellectual property.
3. Combat greenwashing and simplify verification of environmental claims by leveraging synergies between existing reporting frameworks and labeling requirements.
4. Establish effective sustainability indicators for the ICT sector, particularly for digital infrastructure.
