The Department of Defense has awarded a grant of $71,157,977 to Coral Academy of Science Las Vegas. This grant is part of a larger project totaling $88,969,971 aimed at replacing the existing school facilities at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. The funding comes from the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation.
The initiative seeks to address both capacity and condition deficiencies that placed Coral Academy as the 51st school on the Deputy Secretary of Defense's "Public Schools on Military Installations Priority List" in 2019. Once completed, the project will support 1,600 students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
Funding is provided under the Department's Public Schools on Military Installations Program. This program prioritizes military installations with schools facing significant capacity and facility issues according to the Priority List.
A Federal Evaluation Team reviewed the project proposal. The team included representatives from various branches including the Assistant Secretaries of the Air Force, Army, Navy, and the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation. Their evaluation ensured that the award effectively addresses identified deficiencies.
"This grant keeps faith with service members," noted an official statement regarding its impact on education quality for defense-connected students. It also aims to assist in recruiting and retaining essential skills at Nellis Air Force Base while strengthening community partnerships.
The U.S. Department of Defense Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation plays a role in advancing National Defense Strategy priorities by supporting military installation readiness and community resiliency nationwide.
