U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Air and Marine Operations (AMO) intercepted a vessel attempting to smuggle 1,321 pounds of cocaine into Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The estimated value of the seized narcotics is $11.9 million.

“This interdiction highlights our relentless commitment to border security and the protection of our citizens from the dangers of illicit narcotics,” stated Christopher Hunter, Director of Air and Marine Operations in the Caribbean.

The interception occurred during a routine patrol on October 2nd when an AMO Maritime Enforcement Aircraft detected a vessel heading east towards Puerto Rico. The aircraft maintained surveillance to assist an AMO Coastal Interceptor vessel, which intercepted the boat approximately 16 miles east of Desecheo Island.

Onboard were three men claiming Dominican Republic citizenship and 17 bales containing suspected cocaine bricks. A field test at the marine station confirmed the presence of cocaine.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) took custody of both the individuals and contraband for further investigation and prosecution.

“The protection of our Caribbean waters is essential not only to safeguard our borders but also to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities," said DEA Caribbean Division Special Agent in Charge Denise Foster. "This successful interception demonstrates the unwavering commitment of law enforcement agencies in the region."

AMO employs around 1,800 federal agents along with mission support personnel operating 240 aircraft and 300 marine vessels throughout various U.S territories including Puerto Rico and U.S Virgin Islands.
