Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas released a statement on the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks in Israel. He reflected on the events that led to the loss of over 1,200 lives and left many others wounded or held hostage.
"One year ago today, brutal Hamas terrorists attacked innocent people in Israel, massacring more than 1,200 innocent men, women, and children of all ages," said Mayorkas. He highlighted the ongoing situation where hostages remain captive by Hamas despite some being rescued by Israel.
Mayorkas described the attack as "the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust." He expressed mourning for those who lost their lives and extended thoughts to those affected by the violence, including Palestinians impacted by Hamas's actions. "We express our enduring resolve to rescue the remaining hostages," he stated.
The Department of Homeland Security continues efforts to address hate that has intensified since the attacks. "We combat the rise in antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of hate," Mayorkas noted. The department engages with communities nationwide and provides resources to enhance safety for worshippers of all faiths. They also distribute grant funds to help religious institutions and nonprofits secure their communities.
Mayorkas concluded his statement with a call for remembrance and peace: "On this day, we commemorate the victims of the October 7, 2023 terrorist attacks. May the memory of the lives lost continue to be a blessing. We pray for the release of the hostages. We redouble our efforts to combat hate, and we pray for peace."
