Sanjeev “Sonny” Bhagowalia Assistant Commissioner | U.S. Customs and Border Protection
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Norfolk, Virginia, have seized dental supplies valued at over $450,000. These goods, originating from China and destined for Baltimore, violated country of origin marking laws.
According to U.S. law (19 U.S.C. § 1304 and 19 C.F.R. part 134), imported consumer goods must clearly display their country of origin to inform consumers about the source of products and enforce trade laws specific to each country. Mark Laria, CBP’s Area Port Director for the Area Port of Norfolk-Newport News, stated that “consumers have the right, under U.S. law, to know where the products they are purchasing are sourced.” He emphasized that omitting such markings denies American consumers their right to make informed purchasing decisions.
The most recent seizure occurred on September 17 and included nearly two million prophy angle cups and over 1.6 million dental tray covers assessed at $419,211. An earlier shipment seized on August 26 contained nearly 1.8 million dental bibs valued at $35,980.
CBP officers conduct daily inspections of imports to protect consumer rights and safety while maintaining the economic vitality of the nation. The agency's border security mission involves screening international travelers and cargo for illicit substances or items that could harm public safety or national security.
