Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III engaged in a phone conversation with Japan's Minister of Defense, Nakatani Gen, as reported by Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.
During the call, Secretary Austin congratulated Minister Nakatani on his recent appointment. He highlighted the ongoing historic progress between the United States and Japan concerning Alliance priorities. Both officials emphasized their commitment to modernizing Alliance command and control and expanding bilateral presence in Japan's Southwest Islands.
Additionally, they discussed the importance of strengthening defense cooperation with regional partners to promote a shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Secretary Austin expressed his hope for an opportunity to meet Minister Nakatani in person soon.
