Netflix recently presented its 2025 Korean film lineup at the Busan International Film Festival. The event, titled "Next on Netflix: 2025 Korean Films," provided a glimpse into seven upcoming films. Vincent Taewon Kim, Director of Content (Film) for Netflix Korea, along with several filmmakers, discussed their projects and shared insights into their creative processes.
The lineup includes films by notable directors such as Yeon Sang-ho with "Revelations," Byun Sung-hyun with "Good News" (WT), Kim Byung-woo with "The Great Flood," Kim Tae-joon with "Wall to Wall," Namkoong Sun with "Love Untangled," Lee Tae-sung with "Mantis" (WT), and Han Ji-won with the animated feature "Lost in Starlight." This initiative reflects Netflix's commitment to delivering diverse storytelling experiences to its global audience.
Vincent Taewon Kim emphasized the company's focus on quality and variety in its 2025 slate, stating, “To achieve this, it was important for us to focus on the quality and widen the variety of our 2025 film slate. Because viewers’ tastes vary, we strive to provide both universal and unique narratives.” He highlighted that the new lineup offers a range of genres including action, thriller, romantic comedy, sci-fi, and animation.
Yeon Sang-ho revealed his intention to explore filmmaking without extensive CGI in his upcoming project "Revelations." He stated: “I’ve used a lot of CGI from Train to Busan onwards. This time, I wanted to explore filmmaking without extensive CGI.”
Namkoong Sun expressed appreciation for Netflix's global reach through her film "Love Untangled." Lee Tae-sung noted how Netflix's viewing experience aligns well with modern preferences. Byun Sung-hyun remarked on the support creators receive from Netflix.
Han Ji-won's animated film "Lost in Starlight" marks Netflix’s first Korean-language animated feature. She commented on the significance of collaborating with Netflix for this project.
As part of their preview presentation, Netflix released details about several films:
- **Good News** (WT): Set in 1970, it involves a hijacking operation directed by Byun Sung-hyun.
- **The Great Flood**: A sci-fi disaster film set on Earth's last day featuring actors Kim Da-mi and Park Hae-soo.
- **Lost in Starlight**: An animated love story between an astronaut's daughter and a musician.
- **Love Untangled**: A youth romance exploring themes of first love set in 1998.
- **Mantis** (WT): An action film about an assassin reentering a chaotic industry.
- **Revelations**: A thriller involving a pastor and detective driven by personal beliefs.
- **Wall to Wall**: A thriller centered around mysterious apartment noises leading to financial ruin.
