The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced a series of initiatives aimed at fostering a fair and competitive agricultural market. This move has been welcomed by the National Farmers Union (NFU), with its President, Rob Larew, expressing support for the USDA's efforts.

"We commend USDA for continuing to promote competition across our agricultural markets," said Larew. He highlighted the Biden-Harris administration's actions as significant, stating they have done more than any other administration since Theodore Roosevelt to ensure fairness in the agricultural and rural economy for family farmers and ranchers.

Larew noted that today's announcement reflects the USDA's "thoughtful and proactive approach" to tackling pressing issues faced by farmers and ranchers. These include the need for transparency, fairness, and innovation in seed systems and livestock markets.

One key aspect of the USDA's plan is a new framework designed to improve research access to seed germplasm. According to Larew, this represents "a significant step forward." He emphasized that farmers depend on diverse and resilient seed traits to succeed amid an unpredictable climate. The initiative aims to prevent monopolistic practices from limiting seed choices, instead promoting innovation and sustainability.

Additionally, the USDA released findings from an interim report on competition within the meat retail industry. The report highlights barriers that hinder a fair market and resilient food system. Larew pointed out that family farmers and ranchers deserve equitable opportunities to compete, adding that "today’s report highlights the concerning consolidation" affecting their ability to do so.

Larew expressed anticipation for further initiatives from both the USDA and other enforcement agencies to ensure fair play in agricultural markets.
