The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) has announced the release of "Pivot or Die: How Leaders Thrive When Everything Changes," a new book by CTA CEO and New York Times bestselling author Gary Shapiro. The book is available in hardcover, e-book, and audiobook formats.

"Pivot or Die" explores the necessity for leaders to remain adaptable, particularly in business and technology sectors. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian wrote the introduction for the book. It features real-life stories from major companies such as Amazon, Panasonic, Samsung, and Walmart, as well as examples from start-ups and mid-sized companies that have successfully pivoted towards privacy, transparency, and sustainability.

Shapiro introduces a "pivot" framework for leaders to tackle challenges:

- Startup pivot: Utilizing new ideas to disrupt industries.

- Forced pivot: Adjusting to unexpected changes and consumer demands.

- Failure pivot: Learning from failures and applying those lessons effectively.

- Success pivot: Taking advantage of opportunities to surpass competitors.

“This book summarizes core principles leaders should embrace to navigate rapid and often unpredictable changes in our world. I hope that ‘Pivot or Die’ serves as a guide for anyone trying to anticipate and act in a changing world. It is written to equip leaders from all fields with the tools and mindset needed to thrive during disruption,” said Shapiro. “The future belongs to those who are willing to pivot, adapt, and innovate.”

The book emphasizes resilience, curiosity, assertiveness, and foresight as key elements for success in both business and personal life. Shapiro also calls for smart fiscal policies, revisiting antitrust laws with a focus on consumer welfare rather than protecting legacy businesses, immigration reforms, and enabling access to technology.

Ed Bastian praised Shapiro's insights on pivoting: “If there’s anyone with the experience and insight to talk about pivoting, it’s Gary Shapiro. CES has long been the place where businesses experiment and pivots start – and that’s largely thanks to Gary... But Pivot or Die isn’t just essential reading for fans of CES. It offers lessons for leaders across every industry."

Alan Murray commented on the importance of mastering 'the pivot': “Today’s leaders face an unprecedented barrage of new threats... they must master ‘the pivot.’ Shapiro—who executed a perfect pivot when he took his massive CES show digital in 2021... offers an invaluable guide.”

Dr. Lisa Su emphasized continuous learning: “We are in a transformative era... As innovation accelerates... Pivot or Die offers important insights for every leader.”

Senator Mark Warner highlighted entrepreneurship: “The United States has thrived... thanks to generations of entrepreneurs who weren’t afraid to pivot... In Pivot or Die, Gary Shapiro offers a deep dive into the evolution of some of the technology that’s solving big global challenges.”

An event at the Cato Institute will feature a panel discussion with Shapiro alongside Christoper J. Lewis of Public Knowledge, Jessica Melugin of the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and Jennifer Huddleston of the Cato Institute.
