Berlin, October 16, 2024 – A new Netflix feature film inspired by the true story of the German NGO Jugend Rettet and its ship, the Iuventa, is in production. The film follows a group of young Berliners who, driven by passion and courage, launch a crowdfunding campaign to purchase an old ship. Their mission is to save refugees attempting to reach Europe by sea. As they venture into the Mediterranean, their efforts challenge their understanding of law and justice.
The film is directed by Markus Goller with a screenplay co-written by Oliver Ziegenbalg and Michele Cinque. Production has begun successfully in Berlin and is now continuing in Malta. Oscar winners Christian Goldbeck and Volker Bertelmann are responsible for production design and music respectively, reuniting after their work on "All Quiet on the Western Front." Frankie DeMarco oversees cinematography.
Producers include Christopher Zwickler from Flute Film, along with Markus Goller and Oliver Ziegenbalg from Sunnysideup Filmproduktion. Michele Cinque serves as Creative Producer with Lazy Film from Italy. Skadi Lesske and Astrid Weber manage hair and make-up while Mika Braun handles costume design.
The cast features Louis Hofmann alongside Mala Emde, Katharina Stark, Frederick Lau, Maria Dragus, Trevor Magaya, Kathy Etoa, Felice Saibon Wang, Joone Dankou, Merlin von Garnier, Luisa-Céline Gaffron, Omid Memar. Special appearances include Corinna Harfouch, Ulrich Matthes, Franka Potente, Katja Riemann, Frank Plasberg, Herbert Knaup and Eleonora Romandini.
