Mallory Stewart, the Assistant Secretary for Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability, is set to visit Rabat, Morocco from October 21-24, 2024. During her visit, she will participate in the Global Conference on the Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Advancing the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). Stewart is scheduled to be a keynote speaker at this event.

The conference aims to build on previous work by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Scientific Advisory Board and engage with independent scientific experts. The outcomes are expected to guide a newly established temporary working group on AI and future policy-making activities within OPCW. The Kingdom of Morocco and the OPCW Technical Secretariat sponsor this initiative.

Aside from her participation in the conference, Assistant Secretary Stewart plans to hold high-level discussions with Moroccan officials. These discussions will focus on addressing emerging security threats. "Key objectives will include deepening strategic partnerships," she noted. Additionally, they aim to share perspectives and expertise on regional risk reduction approaches and explore opportunities for enhancing multilateral disarmament and international security mechanisms.

During her time at the conference, Stewart will also meet with representatives from OPCW Member Parties. Topics of discussion include maintaining international norms against chemical weapon use, ensuring full CWC implementation legislation, prioritizing information resilience, and supporting the Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy.
