The United States has expressed its condemnation of the recent killings of lawyer Elvino Dias and Podemos parliamentary candidate Paulo Guambe in Mozambique. In a statement, Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller extended condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. He emphasized the need for a swift and thorough investigation, aligning with calls from all four of Mozambique's national political parties.
Miller stated, "Those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable." The U.S. government is urging state institutions, political leaders, citizens, and stakeholders in Mozambique to address electoral disputes peacefully and lawfully while rejecting violence and inflammatory rhetoric.
Furthermore, Miller called on Mozambicans to utilize peaceful means for filing electoral grievances. He highlighted that challenging results and demanding accountability should only occur through the official complaint process.
