Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog to discuss recent developments in the region, including the implications of the killing of Sinwar for a potential ceasefire. The meeting took place amid ongoing tensions and attacks on Israel's northern front.
President Herzog expressed gratitude towards the U.S. administration for its support, particularly mentioning the installation of the new THAAD system in Israel. He highlighted the importance of addressing various fronts where Israel is engaged, emphasizing efforts to resolve the hostage crisis following Sinwar's death. Herzog stated, "There is a unique opportunity to make a special effort to employ all tools necessary and possible to move forward and bring the hostages back home."
Herzog also addressed security concerns from Lebanon, pointing out continuous attacks over the past year and weeks by Hizballah. He stressed that these actions are part of a broader campaign led from Tehran, necessitating decisive responses.
Secretary Blinken reiterated his commitment to working with Israeli officials to seize this moment as an opportunity for peace and security. He said, "I believe very much that the death of Sinwar does create an important opportunity to bring the hostages home, to bring the war to an end, and to ensure Israel’s security." Blinken noted discussions with Prime Minister Netanyahu, Defense Minister Galant, and Chief of Staff Halevi focused on arrangements post-conflict.
The talks between Blinken and Herzog aimed at capitalizing on current events to advance peace efforts in the region.
