Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III recently held a conversation with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant. The discussion focused on Israel's operations in Lebanon and the humanitarian situation in Gaza, according to Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder.
During the call, Secretary Austin conveyed his condolences for the loss of an IDF brigade commander in northern Gaza over the weekend. He reiterated "the United States' unwavering and enduring support for Israel," highlighting "the recent deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery as an example of the ironclad U.S. commitment to Israel's defense."
Secretary Austin also acknowledged "the movement of humanitarian assistance through the Erez crossing" and urged Israel to address "the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza." He encouraged efforts towards seizing opportunities for hostage release and a ceasefire following Yahya Sinwar's death.
Additionally, Secretary Austin expressed concern about reports concerning strikes against the Lebanese Armed Forces. He stressed "the importance of taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL forces."
