Today, the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) responded to the Biden Administration's first National Security Memorandum on Artificial Intelligence (AI). This memorandum follows President Biden’s Executive Order from October 2023 and is intended to enhance U.S. competitiveness, security, and innovation in AI.
Jason Oxman, ITI's President and CEO, expressed support for the administration's efforts. "We appreciate the Biden Administration’s continued efforts to advance the AI Executive Order," he stated. He emphasized that the memo will help the U.S. utilize AI to meet national security goals, promote international cooperation, and secure advanced commercial AI technologies.
The memorandum underscores the significance of the U.S. AI Safety Institute in fostering research and development for frontier AI systems. It also supports a public-private partnership at the National Science Foundation for the National AI Research Resource. Oxman urged policymakers to collaborate with industry experts as they implement these initiatives.
ITI has been active in advocating for legislative action regarding AI safety. The organization led a coalition of over 60 entities urging Congress to authorize the U.S. AI Safety Institute within NIST before Congress adjourns its current session. Additionally, ITI released its AI Security Policy Principles aimed at enhancing cybersecurity measures for AI systems.
The memorandum also highlights strategic investments in infrastructure essential for supporting AI development. ITI's Sustainable Technology Policy Guide discusses how policymakers can foster sustainable innovation while harnessing AI’s benefits.
