Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard R. Verma recently held meetings with key foreign ministers from Lebanon, Iraq, and Qatar in Paris. Over the course of two days, Deputy Secretary Verma met individually with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dr. Fuad Hussein, Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib, and Qatari Minister of State Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al Khulaifi.
During these discussions, Verma highlighted the United States' dedication to finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict along the Blue Line. This resolution aims to enable Israeli and Lebanese civilians on both sides to return safely to their homes. The Deputy Secretary expressed support for the Lebanese government and its institutions, such as the Lebanese Armed Forces, while stressing the importance of resolving Lebanon's presidential vacancy through leadership that represents the people's will.
The talks also addressed efforts towards establishing a lasting ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Such an agreement would aim to end hostilities, ensure the release of hostages, and increase humanitarian aid throughout Gaza. Verma voiced his concern over civilian casualties and suffering in these conflicts, reaffirming U.S. commitment to supporting vulnerable populations.
Verma emphasized regional stability as a priority and thanked the ministers for their shared commitment to fostering diplomatic solutions.
