The Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) concluded the "Responsible AI in Defense Forum" today. This three-day event was held at the Hyatt Regency in Reston, Virginia, from October 28 to 30. It gathered defense leaders, AI experts, policymakers, and global innovators to discuss advancements in Responsible AI (RAI).
The forum offered an opportunity for stakeholders to address technical capabilities and challenges while examining RAI within international military cooperation.
Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks delivered a keynote address via video, emphasizing the importance of trusted AI. She stated, "Over the last dozen years, as advances in machine learning yielded new breakthroughs, we've worked hard at the Pentagon to be a global leader in establishing responsible policies for military use of autonomous systems and AI." Hicks added that DoD's approach has always been guided by ensuring AI is trusted and trustworthy.
The forum explored different topics each day with aligned participation. The first day involved a meeting among the Partnership for Defense's 16 members to explore strategies for enabling RAI across defense enterprises. The second day saw discussions among government, industry, and academic experts on operationalizing RAI in defense. The final day featured a closed-door meeting focused on aligning NATO allies with RAI implementation strategies.
CDAO Dr. Radha Plumb initiated the forum with the AI Partnership for Defense. Plumb noted that "the RAI in Defense Forum — and first-ever in-person PfD on Responsible AI — provided an unprecedented opportunity for the Department to connect its practical Responsible AI tools and guidance with critical partners."
The CDAO expressed satisfaction with hosting this gathering, achieving key objectives such as strengthening relationships with PfD partners and promoting RAI globally. They anticipate accelerated progress both domestically and internationally.
The CDAO began operations in June 2022 and focuses on integrating AI capabilities across the DoD. It aims to accelerate data analytics adoption while safeguarding against threats.
