The global tech trade association ITI has released a memo summarizing significant developments in global AI policymaking over the past year. The document highlights key milestones and suggests future steps for policymakers to support AI innovation worldwide.

Marking one year since U.S. President Joe Biden's Executive Order on AI, the finalization of the G7 International Guiding Principles and Code of Conduct for Advanced AI Systems, and the inaugural AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park, ITI's memo examines themes such as red-teaming, advanced AI systems, and international standards. It stresses the importance of global cooperation in shaping AI policies moving forward.

"One year ago marked the most consequential week in the history of AI policymaking," stated ITI President and CEO Jason Oxman. "Continued international collaboration is critical to foster a common understanding of key concepts – like what AI red-teaming means in practice – and align AI governance approaches. This in turn will help bolster public trust, mitigate risks for consumers and businesses, and enhance accountability across the AI ecosystem. Governments worldwide must continue to advance this work to fully leverage AI’s transformative power. ITI has been a trusted partner of governments globally for decades, and we encourage lawmakers to continue to leverage our technical and policy expertise."

The memo discusses how governments are working on developing policies that promote responsible development and deployment of frontier AI models. There is an emerging consensus on what needs addressing at a global level to harmonize approaches and make collective progress.

ITI has also published several policy guides focusing on crucial aspects of AI:
