Pedro Páramo, a film adaptation of Juan Rulfo's iconic novel, has been released on Netflix. Directed by Rodrigo Prieto in his directorial debut, the film was produced with a team of Mexican artists and technicians. The production involved extensive efforts from extras, artisans, decorators, costume designers, and set builders to recreate Comala in its contrasting periods.

The economic impact of Pedro Páramo on Mexico's economy is significant. According to Netflix data, the film contributed over 375 million pesos. This figure reflects both direct production spending and expenditures throughout the supply chain.

The project employed more than 550 technicians and artists. In San Luis Potosí alone, over 2,500 workers were involved. This resulted in more than 14,900 hotel nights booked in the state and participation from over 900 extras during filming.

The costume design department collaborated with artisans and tailors across various states to produce more than 5,000 garments for the film. Contributions included huaraches from Comala, Colima; sarapes from Contla, Tlaxcala; charro tailoring from Aguascalientes; and rebozos from Tenancingo de Degollado in the State of Mexico.

The soundtrack featured performances by over 30 traditional musicians from Jalisco, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí, Puebla, Chiapas, and Mexico City.

Rodrigo Prieto shared insights into bringing the book to life: “For the filming... many exteriors were required," he said. These locations included streets with specific characteristics as well as plazas and fondas mentioned in the book.

Francisco Ramos of Netflix emphasized their commitment to Mexico's audiovisual industry: "There is no clearer way to prove Netflix's commitment... than with this film." He noted that cultural industries have an enduring value through job creation and societal impact.

Pedro Páramo is now available for streaming on Netflix.
