Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in Rio de Janeiro during the G20 summit to address the situation in the Middle East, focusing on conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Spokesperson Matthew Miller provided a readout of the meeting.
Blinken emphasized "the urgency of securing the release of all hostages and increasing and sustaining the delivery of humanitarian assistance." The discussions also covered "the importance of establishing a path for the post-conflict period that provides governance, security, and reconstruction for Gaza."
In addition to Gaza, both officials discussed diplomatic efforts regarding Lebanon. They talked about reaching a resolution that would implement United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. This aims to allow citizens on both sides of the border to return home safely.
The talks underscore ongoing international efforts to address complex geopolitical issues in these regions.
