Brendan Carr urged to prioritize digital divide as new FCC chair

Following the appointment of Brendan Carr as chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) issued a statement urging Carr to focus on bridging the digital divide and avoiding overreach. Joe Kane, ITIF's director of broadband and spectrum policy, expressed confidence in Carr's abilities.

"We congratulate Commissioner Carr on his soon-to-be Chairmanship," Kane stated. "He has the experience and skill to reverse the course of anti-consumer partisan frolics beyond the FCC's jurisdiction that have characterized some of the current administration's major actions."

Kane emphasized that Carr should concentrate on spectrum policy aimed at maximizing productivity and broadband policy addressing the digital divide. He advised that Carr maintain a clear focus within the FCC's jurisdiction. "An agenda of careful adherence to the limited jurisdiction of the FCC will be essential," Kane noted.

The ITIF warned against expanding regulatory efforts targeting "big tech" or other political targets, which they believe would not align with the new administration's mandate.
