The first session of the U.S.-Senegal Joint Economic Commission took place on November 22, 2024, in Washington, D.C. The meeting was led by Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell for the United States and Foreign Minister Yacine Fall for Senegal.
This Commission is founded on a mutual vision to enhance bilateral economic cooperation, boost investment opportunities, and strengthen business relations. It underscores the commitment of both nations to foster economic growth and productive investments that benefit both Senegalese and American citizens.
During the meeting, both delegations expressed their dedication to expanding economic and commercial cooperation. They engaged in constructive discussions about the importance of economic reform and a robust private sector to drive growth. Sessions covered topics such as agricultural cooperation, sustainable blue economy development, technology partnerships, and improving business climates. Participants shared ideas aimed at increasing economic opportunities in both countries. Follow-up actions will be pursued through diplomatic channels to ensure swift implementation of these commitments.
The U.S. delegation commended Senegal's government for its progress in enhancing transparency in public financial management. "The United States welcomes Senegal’s continued cooperation with the IMF to address the findings of the preliminary report on the state of public finances," stated a representative from the U.S. side. The statement also noted anticipation for supporting Senegal's ongoing economic reforms and collaboration with international partners like the IMF.
Representatives from various U.S. departments including State, Agriculture, Commerce, Treasury, USAID, Millennium Challenge Corporation, and International Development Finance Corporation participated alongside senior officials from several Senegalese ministries such as African Integration and Foreign Affairs; Finance; Agriculture; Fisheries; Communication; Telecommunication; Digitalization; Energy; Petroleum; Mines; as well as the Agency for Promotion of Investments and Major Works.
In alignment with plans to hold regular sessions of this Joint Economic Commission, it was decided that its second session will take place in Senegal.
