U.S. Senator Ben Cardin and U.K. Member of Parliament Sarah Champion have issued a joint statement addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, which has become the largest displacement crisis globally. Since April 2023, conflict in Sudan has led to 8.4 million people being displaced within the country and an additional 3.1 million seeking refuge in neighboring nations.
"The Chairs of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the House of Commons International Development Committee are outraged by the lack of action to address catastrophic violence unfolding in Sudan," they stated. The leaders emphasized that "harrowing accounts of widespread human rights atrocities and the looming shadow of famine – threatening millions of innocent lives – demand an urgent and unified global response."
Cardin and Champion urged their governments to collaborate, utilizing diplomatic influence and financial resources to overcome obstacles to humanitarian aid, seek a diplomatic resolution to end the conflict, and ensure accountability for those responsible for atrocities.
They concluded with a call for international focus: "The world cannot—and must not—abandon the people of Sudan in their darkest hour. Their immense suffering needs our unwavering focus and decisive action to restore peace, justice, and dignity for all."
