Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Amanda Dory, recently held meetings with key ministerial leaders from Benin. The discussions focused on the strategic partnership between the United States and Benin, emphasizing regional security and cooperation.
The meeting included Minister of Defense Fortunet Nouatin, Minister of Finance Romuald Wadagni, Minister of Foreign Affairs Olushegun Adjadi Bakari, and Chief of Defense Staff Major General Fructueux Gbaguidi. Ms. Dory reiterated the U.S.'s commitment to Benin and other Coastal West African nations. She highlighted the necessity of collaboration with regional and international partners to prevent the spread of Violent Extremist Organizations (VEOs).
A significant part of the discussion was on integrating defense, development, and diplomacy to tackle instability in the region. Ms. Dory emphasized strengthening civil-military relations and implementing security sector governance within armed forces. Minister Nouatin acknowledged the importance of cooperation with the Department of Defense in combating violent extremist organizations to prevent terrorism from spreading towards Gulf of Guinea countries.
Both parties agreed on continuing efforts to enhance Benin's armed forces' capabilities and addressing mutual security challenges.
