U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello is set to embark on a diplomatic mission to several countries, including Qatar, Kenya, the United Kingdom, and Mauritania. The journey begins on December 6 and aims to enhance humanitarian support for the people of Sudan. Perriello's efforts will focus on preventing atrocities and weapon flows while working towards ending the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The trip builds upon recent advancements that have improved humanitarian access both into and within Sudan. During his travels, Perriello will engage with key government officials as well as representatives from various organizations such as the African Union, the Arab League, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, and the United Nations. Non-governmental organizations and members of Sudanese civil society are also part of his agenda.
In these discussions, Perriello plans to stress several critical points. He will call for warring parties in Sudan to permit additional UN humanitarian hubs to aid in distributing relief across the country. Furthermore, he will advocate for creating humanitarian corridors that ensure civilians' safe passage along with unhindered movement of aid. Protecting civilians from harm, particularly women and girls facing gender-based violence, is another priority. Lastly, supporting a political transition towards civilian governance remains a significant objective.
