U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Laredo Port of Entry have seized a significant amount of anabolic steroids, including testosterone, hidden within a passenger vehicle. The discovery was made by CBP's Office of Field Operations during routine inspections this week.
Port Director Alberto Flores commented on the operation, stating, "Our frontline CBP officers maintain strict vigilance and their application of inspections experience and technology led to the discovery of a significant amount of steroids deeply hidden within a vehicle." He further emphasized the rarity of such large quantities being found, noting that "this seizure underscores the commitment of CBP to ensure the security of our border and stem the commercialization and abuse of such controlled substances."
The incident occurred on December 3rd at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge. A 25-year-old female U.S. citizen driving a 2012 GMC Terrain was directed for secondary inspection. Upon further examination using canine units and non-intrusive inspection systems, officers uncovered 210 vials and 4,760 pills with a combined weight exceeding 21 pounds.
Anabolic steroids are classified as Schedule III substances under the Controlled Substances Act. They are approved in limited circumstances for human or veterinary use. Research has shown that high doses can lead to mood swings, increased hostility, impaired judgment, and aggression.
Following the seizure, CBP confiscated both the steroids and the vehicle involved. Homeland Security Investigations special agents have arrested the driver and initiated an investigation into the matter.
