A recent inspection by the U.S. Department of Labor at a meat processing facility in Atalla, Alabama, revealed ongoing safety hazards that have not been addressed since initial findings in 2022. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) identified these issues during a follow-up visit in July 2024.

Dean Sausage Company Inc. was initially cited in December 2022 for multiple violations, including inadequate machine safety guards, improper lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance, unsafe use of electrical installations, and exposure to various hazards such as electric shock and hazardous chemicals.

The company's failure to address these concerns led to further inspections. In September 2023, OSHA found similar violations and issued citations for nine repeat offenses along with two serious ones.

During the most recent inspection in July 2024, OSHA noted three repeat violations related to lockout/tagout procedures and hazard communication programs. Additionally, two serious violations were cited for missing electrical panel covers.

"Putting employees at risk by neglecting safety is a reckless way to operate. Dean Sausage Company’s repeated disregard for worker safety shows a troubling priority of profits over people," stated Joel Batiz, OSHA Area Office Director in Birmingham, Alabama. "The company must correct its disturbing workplace safety failures before an employee suffers a needless injury or worse."

As a result of the July inspection, Dean Sausage Company faces proposed penalties totaling $103,245. This is on top of $109,823 assessed after previous inspections.

This investigation is part of OSHA's national emphasis program focused on enforcing safety standards and increasing awareness about amputation hazards within manufacturing industries.

Founded in 1955, Dean Sausage Company supplies fresh and frozen sausage products to retailers throughout the southern United States.
