The Scientific Report of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is now accessible on DietaryGuidelines.gov. This report provides independent, evidence-based findings and recommendations to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). These insights will aid in shaping the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030, which are anticipated to be released in late 2025.
"The Dietary Guidelines serve as the foundation for national nutrition programs, standards, and education," stated HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. He emphasized that these guidelines offer health professionals resources to help the public choose a healthy diet. Becerra added that this report would ensure future guidelines consider socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and culture.
The committee focused on health equity by considering factors such as socioeconomic position and cultural background. Their work expanded beyond food types to include strategies promoting healthy dietary patterns throughout life.
"USDA and HHS are excited to begin the next phase to develop the Dietary Guidelines for Americans," said USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack. He acknowledged the committee's expertise and collaboration and expressed gratitude for public comments received during this process.
A 60-day public comment period will open soon, allowing written feedback on the Scientific Report. Additionally, a public meeting is scheduled for January 16, 2025, where oral comments can be presented. Pre-registration is required for participation.
The Scientific Report serves as a critical resource in developing the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Updated every five years, these guidelines form the cornerstone of federal nutrition programs by providing food-based recommendations aimed at preventing chronic diseases.
The report results from a multi-year effort emphasizing transparency. In 2022, HHS and USDA invited public input on scientific questions reviewed by the committee. Public engagement was encouraged through online access to meetings and submission opportunities for written or oral comments over an extended period. The committee received approximately 9,900 comments informing their review process.
