Samuel Rappylee Bateman, 48, from Colorado City, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison followed by lifetime supervised release. This decision was made by United States District Judge Susan M. Brnovich. Earlier this year, on April 1, Bateman pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit transportation of a minor for criminal sexual activity and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.
United States Attorney Gary Restaino commented on the case stating, “Protecting the most vulnerable is our highest calling as prosecutors.” He expressed gratitude towards the prosecutors and law enforcement involved in the investigation and acknowledged the victim advocates for their dedication.
FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Jose A. Perez remarked on the importance of child safety: “Every child should feel and be safe in their homes.” He noted that Bateman's sentencing offers some closure to victims, with hopes they can rebuild their lives surrounded by trusted adults.
Bateman had portrayed himself as a religious prophet and led a child sexual abuse conspiracy over several years across multiple states including Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and Nebraska. The conspiracy involved at least ten children who were victimized starting from 2019. In 2020 and 2021, followers provided their minor daughters as "brides" for Bateman's abuse. Victims were coerced into participating in various sexual activities with both adults and other children.
The abuse continued until Bateman’s arrest on federal charges in September 2022. Following his arrest, his victims were placed under the care of the Arizona Department of Child Safety. However, Bateman conspired with followers to kidnap eight girls from custody placements later that year; they were eventually located by law enforcement in Washington state and returned to Arizona.
In addition to Bateman’s conviction, eleven adult followers have also been convicted related to this conspiracy. Two co-defendants faced trial while others entered guilty pleas; several have already received sentences with more pending.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation-Phoenix with prosecution handled by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona in Phoenix. They extended thanks particularly towards organizations like Arizona Department of Child Safety among others for their assistance throughout this case.
