A recent investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor has revealed that a Marietta-based tree trimming contractor could have prevented the death of a 38-year-old worker. The worker, an arborist with Serious Tree Services LLC, was electrocuted on May 20, 2024, when his equipment came into contact with an unprotected power line at a site in Acworth.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) conducted the investigation and concluded that the incident occurred while the arborist was trimming lower branches of a 60-foot tree. His stabilizing line touched a residential power line, resulting in his electrocution.
“Serious Tree Services failed to meet their obligation to protect workers by adhering to industry safety standards, resulting in a preventable tragedy,” stated OSHA Area Director Jeffery Stawowy from Atlanta-West. He emphasized the importance for employers to focus on training and hazard prevention to avoid such incidents.
The investigation found that Serious Tree Services allowed employees to work within 10 feet of an energized and ungrounded power line without using appropriate arc-rated personal protective equipment. Additionally, they used conductive stabilizing lines with steel cores, increasing electrical hazard exposure.
OSHA identified four serious violations and proposed penalties amounting to $29,035 against Serious Tree Services LLC. This company offers commercial and residential services like emergency tree removal and stump grinding in the Atlanta metro area.
The company has been given 15 business days from receiving its citations and penalties to comply with OSHA's findings or contest them before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
