Bipartisan legislation passes reducing health care reporting requirements

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has expressed approval following the U.S. Senate's passage of two bipartisan legislative measures, the Employer Reporting Improvement Act and the Paperwork Burden Reduction Act. These bills aim to alleviate administrative challenges faced by small businesses. The House of Representatives had unanimously passed related legislation in 2023.

Josselin Castillo, NFIB Principal of Federal Government Relations, stated, “This relief from red tape is a breath of fresh air that small businesses desperately need.” Castillo emphasized that these legislative efforts represent a significant move towards easing administrative burdens for small enterprises by facilitating electronic document filing and promoting flexibility. This approach aims to reduce bureaucratic obstacles while protecting small businesses from unnecessary fines.

Small business owners often cite "unreasonable government regulations" as a primary concern. The Employer Reporting Improvement Act seeks to simplify compliance requirements, safeguard employee privacy, and modernize communication through electronic document filing. Similarly, the Paperwork Burden Reduction Act aims to decrease the volume of physical forms employers are required to send employees annually. Streamlining reporting and compliance processes is intended to save time for business owners without affecting healthcare coverage for employees.

The NFIB extended its appreciation to legislators who supported this legislation: Representatives Adrian Smith (R-NE), Mike Thompson (D-CA), and Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO). Additionally, gratitude was expressed towards Senators Mark Warner (D-VA), Todd Young (R-IN), John Thune (R-SD), and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) for their leadership in advancing these initiatives which promise considerable paperwork relief for small businesses nationwide.

For over eight decades, NFIB has been an advocate for America's small and independent business owners across all state capitals as well as in Washington D.C. Established in 1943, NFIB remains committed exclusively to supporting small businesses today.
