A man from Sycamore Township has been arrested and charged with making false statements related to a rape case dating back to 1989. Federal agents took Frederick Louis Tanzer, 66, into custody after a search of his home and vehicles on Kenwood Road. The arrest follows an investigation that identified him as the prime suspect in this cold case.
Authorities allege that Tanzer provided false information to FBI agents during questioning. DNA evidence collected from a Starbucks cup discarded by Tanzer matched the DNA found at the crime scene from 1989, according to an affidavit supporting the criminal complaint.
Tanzer, who has practiced medicine in Ohio, Kansas, and Colorado, is accused of denying any interaction with the victim on the date she was raped. The incident occurred on August 1, 1989, when the victim was attacked in her condominium in Cincinnati.
The affidavit provides detailed circumstances surrounding the attack. The assailant reportedly wore black Lycra clothing and used various items to restrain and assault the victim over several hours. Federal officials urge anyone with similar information or knowledge about this or other rapes to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
The announcement of Tanzer's arrest was made by Kenneth L. Parker, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio; Elena Iatarola, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Cincinnati Division; and Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa A. Theetge. Assistance came from IRS-Criminal Investigation Cincinnati Field Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Kelly K. Rossi and Julie D. Garcia are handling prosecution for this case.
It is important to note that a criminal complaint contains allegations only, and defendants remain innocent until proven guilty in court.
