The United States has expressed its approval of the recent Ankara Declaration made between Ethiopia and Somalia. This declaration, dated December 11, emphasizes both countries' commitment to sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity while also promoting cooperation on mutual interests.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken stated that the U.S. appreciates Türkiye's role in facilitating this agreement. He added that the U.S. anticipates forthcoming technical negotiations aimed at enabling Ethiopia to gain reliable access to the sea for economic benefit without compromising Somalia's territorial integrity.

"The United States welcomes the December 11 Declaration between the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia reaffirming each country’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity and advancing cooperation on shared interests," said Blinken. "We appreciate the leadership of Türkiye in facilitating this Declaration."

Further emphasizing dialogue as a crucial component for stability in the region, Blinken encouraged both nations to enhance their cooperation on security issues, particularly in combating al-Shabaab. The statement concluded with an affirmation of ongoing bilateral relations with Ethiopia and Somalia.

"We look forward to technical negotiations to permit Ethiopia to enjoy reliable, secure, and sustainable access to the sea for mutual economic benefit while respecting Somalia’s territorial integrity," he continued.

"Ongoing dialogue and engagement are essential for a stable and prosperous future for Ethiopia and Somalia," Blinken noted. "We encourage Ethiopia and Somalia to intensify their cooperation on mutual security interests, particularly the fight against al-Shabaab."
