A California resident has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Rhode Island on charges related to an alleged scheme involving business email compromise and money laundering. The scheme reportedly defrauded businesses, individuals, and the Town of Bristol, Rhode Island, out of nearly $9 million. United States Attorney Zachary A. Cunha announced the indictment.

The court documents allege that Alec Tahir Baker, 60, from Corona, California, played a key role in this conspiracy. According to the indictment, members of the conspiracy sent phishing emails to various entities including individuals and corporations as well as the Town of Bristol. These emails enabled access to recipients' computer networks once opened. It is further alleged that Baker or his co-conspirators then directed banks to transfer funds into accounts they controlled.

The indictment describes how a member of the conspiracy would impersonate vendors through emails sent to employees at victim companies. By providing false bank account information for payments, company funds were allegedly redirected into accounts managed by Baker or other conspirators.

Additionally, it is claimed that Baker supplied banks with false information and documents using real identities fraudulently when questioned about fund transfers into his accounts. He also falsely claimed business relationships with victim companies.

Baker allegedly opened over 40 bank accounts under his name and multiple shell companies he created for receiving fraudulent funds. After deposits were made into these accounts, some funds were withdrawn in cash or cashier’s checks while others were transferred to separate accounts controlled by him including cryptocurrency platforms like Coinbase.

The indictment claims total losses amounted to at least $8,854,243 with approximately $7,649,876 transmitted into Baker's control.

Specifically targeting municipal resources too; on January 18th last year one conspirator accessed Bristol's network leading up next day’s unauthorized wire transfer worth $310k being routed towards an account belonging directly under Bakers’ management who subsequently dispersed those proceeds elsewhere via withdrawals & further transactions between various channels he maintained dominion over such finances.

Following this investigation led initially via Criminal Complaint dated November first last year culminating subsequent arrest four days later within Dallas Texas whereupon judicial proceedings ensued culminating present formal charges against him pending forthcoming arraignment scheduled eventually hereupon reaching Providence-based District Court sometime soon yet undecidedly so far awaiting
