State Department releases 2023 digest on US international law practice

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

The Department of State has announced the release of the 2023 Digest of United States Practice in International Law. This publication, edited by the Office of the Legal Adviser, covers developments from the calendar year 2023 and is available exclusively on the Department's website. The Digest provides a comprehensive record of U.S. Government views and practices in both public and private international law.

The history of this Digest dates back to an 1877 treatise by John Cadwalader, which was succeeded by multi-volume encyclopedias focusing on selected areas of international law. Known as "Whiteman’s" after Marjorie Whiteman, who served as editor from 1963 to 1971, the Digest has been published annually since 1973 by the Office of the Legal Adviser. Although there was a suspension in publication after 1988, it resumed in 2000 and has continued to cover each subsequent year through 2022.

Past editions from 1989 to 2022 are also accessible online for those interested in historical records.
