The United States Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS) has announced a new partnership with the OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development. The collaboration, named "Developing an Artificial Intelligence Policy Framework for the Americas," was unveiled on December 12, 2024, during the OAS VII Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities of Science and Technology.
The project is backed by over $1.1 million in grant funding from the U.S. government. It aims to promote the creation of safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence (AI) policy frameworks among OAS member states across the Western Hemisphere.
The initiative will be led by the OAS Executive Secretariat for Integral Development and will involve decision-makers from governments, private sectors, and academia throughout the Americas. Key focus areas include:
- Developing policy and institutional frameworks for responsible AI use.
- Identifying good practices and key actions to effectively deploy AI while mitigating risks.
- Fostering AI standards development.
- Encouraging multisectoral collaboration among OAS Member States.
- Advancing skills building and training related to AI.
