A member of the Gardena 13 street gang, Justin Arteaga, was sentenced to life in federal prison for the murder of a 29-year-old man in November 2020. The incident occurred in front of the victim's family home and was part of gang-related activities.

Arteaga, also known as "Hitta," received his sentence from United States District Judge André Birotte Jr., who additionally ordered him to pay $37,554 in restitution. Arteaga was found guilty by a jury on July 1 for one count of violent crime in aid of racketeering (VICAR) murder after a five-day trial. He has been detained since December 2020.

"This defendant senselessly took a promising young life and will now spend the rest of his days in federal prison," stated United States Attorney Martin Estrada. He emphasized the impact of gang violence on communities and families while expressing sympathy for the victim’s family.

Homeland Security Investigations Los Angeles Special Agent Eddy Wang commented on the sentencing: "This sentencing ensures that the defendant will no longer pose a threat to the community." He expressed hope that it would bring some peace to the grieving family.

The murder took place when Arteaga, along with Antonio Yanez and George Hernandez, confronted the victim and his brother outside their home. All three were armed and began shooting after perceiving disrespect from the victim towards Gardena 13. The confrontation escalated into a shootout involving Jesus Hernandez, another gang member.

The police responded promptly but could not save the victim, who succumbed to gunshot wounds at the scene. George Hernandez died later at a hospital due to injuries sustained during the incident. Arteaga was apprehended four days later at Los Angeles International Airport while attempting to flee to Mexico.

Jesus Hernandez pleaded guilty in May 2022 for firearm possession charges and is serving a 110-month sentence. Yanez admitted guilt in February 2022 for multiple charges including VICAR and is awaiting sentencing scheduled for January 31, 2025.

Christopher Bombardiere from ATF's Los Angeles Field Division condemned gang violence: "These trigger pullers...will always be sought out and prosecuted." He extended condolences to those affected by this tragedy.

Gardena Police Chief Michael Saffell acknowledged law enforcement's efforts: "Today’s sentencing underscores...the commitment...to deliver justice." He praised collaboration among agencies involved in ensuring accountability for this crime.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, ATF, and Gardena Police Department with prosecution led by Assistant United States Attorneys Kevin J. Butler and Varun Behl.
