Timothy M. O’Shea, the United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Alex J. Stubbs from Madison has been sentenced to 14 months in federal prison for passing counterfeit U.S. currency. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley after Stubbs pleaded guilty on September 19, 2024. He is also required to pay $3,400 in restitution.
Stubbs and his codefendant Cornelius Stewart were involved in a scheme between July and November 2023 where they used counterfeit $100 bills at over three dozen merchants across Wisconsin. They made small purchases with the fake bills to receive legitimate currency as change. Stewart was responsible for manufacturing the counterfeit money and provided it to Stubbs in exchange for real money.
Stewart entered a guilty plea on December 9, 2024, and is scheduled to be sentenced on February 27, 2025.
The investigation into Stubbs and Stewart's activities was conducted by several police departments including those from Madison, Fitchburg, Sun Prairie, Cottage Grove, Cross Plains, Lake Mills, Marshall, Verona, Shorewood Hills, Tomah, Oconomowoc as well as the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Secret Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Anderson led the prosecution of this case.
