Cameron S. Hurd, a 34-year-old resident of Council Bluffs, Iowa, has been sentenced to 84 months in federal prison for the distribution and receipt of child pornography. The sentencing took place on December 13, 2024, in Omaha, Nebraska. Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. presided over the case.

Following his prison term, Hurd will undergo five years of supervised release. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay $12,000 in restitution to four victims identified in relation to his crimes.

The investigation was initiated by the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) after receiving a "cyber tip" from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The tip highlighted suspicious internet activity involving Hurd's IP address. According to NCMEC's report to NSP, 16 files containing child pornography were uploaded from Hurd’s IP address to Kik Messenger on or about November 19, 2021.

A search warrant was executed at Hurd’s residence in Douglas County, Nebraska on August 25, 2022. During the search, investigators seized Hurd's cellphone which contained approximately 30 videos of child pornography linked to Kik Messenger. Among these was a video depicting a toddler being sexually assaulted by an adult male.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project leverages resources from federal, state and local agencies to locate and prosecute individuals who exploit children online while identifying and rescuing victims.

The investigation into this case was conducted by the Nebraska State Patrol.
