Honduran national pleads guilty to illegal reentry; faces enhanced sentence

U.S. Attorney Duane Evans announced that Alvaro Luis Alcerro-Banegas, 38, has pled guilty to illegal reentry of a removed alien. The plea was entered on December 10, 2024, in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a) and Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(b)(1).

Court documents reveal that Alcerro-Banegas reentered the United States after being deported on September 2, 2022. He came to the attention of Immigration and Customs Enforcement following his arrest by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office on March 2, 2024. Previously, on January 18, 2017, he was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for illegal re-entry after deportation by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Alcerro-Banegas faces potential penalties including up to two years imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, up to one year of supervised release, and a mandatory $100 special assessment fee. Due to his prior felony conviction, he also faces an enhanced sentence of up to ten years imprisonment.

U.S. Attorney Evans commended the efforts of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office in this investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carter K.D. Guice Jr., from the General Crimes Unit, is leading the prosecution.
