An Attleboro resident, Eric Brault, 31, has been arrested and charged with possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The arrest follows an investigation that allegedly identified Brault as a user of an internet-based communications application involved in the trafficking of CSAM. A search conducted at his residence reportedly uncovered over 200 video and image files depicting CSAM on his phone.

Brault, who is a Level 1 sex offender, was previously convicted for indecent assault and battery on a child under 14 years old. He had been sentenced to 18 months of probation following that conviction.

If found guilty of the current charges, Brault faces a potential sentence ranging from 10 to 20 years in prison. Additionally, he could receive supervised release for at least five years up to life and be fined up to $250,000. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy and Michael J. Krol, Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations in New England. The Attleboro Police Department provided valuable assistance in the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica L. Soto from the Major Crimes Unit is prosecuting.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime through community collaboration and strategic enforcement priorities.

"The details contained in the charging documents are allegations," it was noted in the announcement. "The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law."
