U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Field Operations recently held its inaugural Teen Citizens Academy in Puerto Rico at the San Juan Customs House. The event took place on December 13, 2024, marking a significant milestone for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in Puerto Rico.

The academy welcomed 40 high school students from Bayamon and Cataño public schools, who are part of the Alas Para Un Sueño (Wings for a Dream) program under the Puerto Rico Department of Education’s Bayamon Educational Region. "This program highlights CBP’s dedication to community engagement and education," said Roberto Vaquero, San Juan Field Office Director of Field Operations. He added that by introducing students to CBP's mission and operations, they aim to inspire future contributions to national security and public service.

The Teen Citizens Academy will continue until June 2025, with more visits planned to CBP facilities and collaborations with federal and state partners for a comprehensive experience. Students participated in interactive sessions on document fraud detection, contraband enforcement, agriculture inspections, K-9 demonstrations, and pest identification activities led by CBP and USDA experts.

The day concluded with presentations from two CBP Explorers from San Juan Post 818 along with their advisor. This aimed to encourage students to explore careers in public service through the CBP Explorers Program.

Notable attendees included Mr. Jonathan Velazquez from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico; Ms. Gisela Padilla from the PR Department of Education Bayamon Educational Region; and Ms. Naomy Candelaria from USDA Entomology Identifier. Support came from CBP Office of Field Operations personnel as well as USDA’s Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ), K-9, and Veterinary Services partners.

CBP is recognized as America's largest law enforcement organization focused on border management. With over 65,000 personnel, it plays a crucial role in protecting America across various terrains while facilitating lawful travel and trade.
