Muskogee man sentenced for attempted robbery in Indian Country

A Muskogee resident has been sentenced to 105 months in prison for attempted robbery, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Jacob Matthew Staton, aged 29, was convicted on one count of attempted robbery in Indian Country.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Muskogee Police Department. Staton pleaded guilty to the charge on July 11, 2024. Investigators reported that on January 4, 2020, Staton attempted an armed robbery in a parking lot in Muskogee. When his target resisted, Staton used his firearm to assault the individual and discharged two shots as they fled. The incident took place within Muscogee (Creek) Nation Reservation boundaries in Muskogee County.

Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White presided over the hearing at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Staton will remain under U.S. Marshals Service custody until he is transferred to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to serve his sentence without parole.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jordan Howanitz represented the prosecution in this case.
