A Chicago man, Diago Davis, has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. The sentencing follows his guilty plea on July 15, 2024. Davis, aged 51, was found with a loaded firearm at his residence in Hiawatha, Iowa, during a police search on February 3, 2024.

The court heard that Davis used the weapon to assault a pregnant teenager earlier that day. He mistakenly believed she had taken his PlayStation 5. Davis has previous felony convictions related to drugs.

United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams sentenced Davis in Cedar Rapids to 27 months of imprisonment and three years of supervised release post-incarceration. In the federal system, parole is not an option. Until he is transported to a federal facility, Davis remains in the custody of the United States Marshal.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement and communities. On May 26, 2021, the Department introduced a strategy enhancing PSN's efforts through community trust-building and strategic enforcement priorities.

Assistant United States Attorney Devra T. Hake prosecuted the case following an investigation by the Hiawatha Police Department.
